Sarong 189 x 106 cm; In traditional sarungs such as this one, the 'kepala' panel divided the main design field, the 'badan', into two equal parts. The 'kepala' shown here is traditional, being made up of two rows of opposed triangles, sometimes known as 'tumpal', and two vertical 'papan'panels.
This sarung has been opened out to show how the design is laid out.A sarung is always sewn into a tube before it is worn.

accentuated in simple lines diagonally drawn across the badan.

In Pekalongan the workshops -established by Indo-European women in the late 19th and early 20th centuries- produced designs which suited the taste of Euro pean customers. The fishscale filling design in the main field is traditionally Javanese, however.

Kain panjang, 260 x 104 Lasem (kl.Riss 5 cm)
Hand drawn wax resist on cotton, natural dyes. The two end fields (tumpals) are coloured differently, but have the same patterns. The ‘purple’ colour on one end is achieved by over dyeing a red base with blue. This is a stunning Lasem cloth in perfect condition. The pattern features all flying, walking and creeping creatures in nature and has cosmological overtones.
